As facilities get more complex and schedules get tighter, more operators are moving piping work off the job site and into the fabrication shop.
The case for building it in the shop
Field piping work is exposed to everything a job site can throw at it: weather, congestion, competing trades and limited access to equipment. Shop fabrication removes most of that. Fit-up happens on a table, welding happens with a positioner, and inspection happens where the inspector is already standing.
The result is not just better welds. It is a shorter critical path, because the module is being built while civil work is still underway rather than after it finishes.
What a module includes
A pipe module is a complete assembly — pipe spools, valves, supports and structural steel — delivered as one piece. Depending on the scope it can also carry instrumentation, panels and equipment already mounted and connected.
- Pipe spools fabricated to project isometrics
- Structural rack or skid frame with lifting and tie-down points
- Valves, fittings and supports installed
- Coating applied before shipment
- Instrumentation and panels where the scope calls for it
Planning for modular delivery
Modules have to be sized for the road as well as the process. Transport width, height and weight limits drive how the system is split, and lifting points have to be designed for how the module will be handled on arrival.
Because Smith Industries hauls and sets with its own trucks and cranes, we plan the split and the lift together with the fabrication — not after the module is already built.
