Storage Tank Inspection Checklist for Oil and Gas Operators
Corrosion, a leaking nozzle or a damaged roof can turn into downtime, environmental exposure or a regulatory finding. A consistent inspection routine catches these while they are still small.
Why routine inspection matters
Storage tanks hold crude oil, produced water, chemicals and other fluids that have to stay contained through the full service life of the asset. Most tank failures are not sudden — they begin as thinning shell plate, a weeping seam or a fitting that never seated correctly, and they progress quietly until something gives.
A written inspection routine turns that slow progression into something visible. It also produces the documentation operators need when a regulator, insurer or buyer asks what condition the asset is in.
What to walk through
The list below covers the items most commonly found during routine external inspection. It is a starting point, not a substitute for a formal inspection program written for your facility.
- Shell and seams — corrosion, pitting, coating failure, weeping or staining below welds
- Roof and fittings — standing water, deformation, seal condition, thief hatch operation
- Nozzles and connections — gasket condition, bolt torque, evidence of leakage
- Foundation and base — settlement, erosion under the ring, water pooling against the shell
- Access steel — stairway, walkway and handrail condition, fastener corrosion
- Containment — berm integrity, drain valve position, accumulated fluid
- Labeling and signage — legibility, accuracy against current service
Turning findings into action
Findings only matter if they route somewhere. Rank each item by whether it affects containment, whether it is progressing, and how long the repair window is. A coating blister is monitored; a wet seam is scheduled; a compromised nozzle is addressed now.
